Leonardo Di Caprio - A Great Actor?

IMHO a very limited actor with just 2 emotions on screen, smouldering hammy menace or hysterical laughter.
Others say he is fantastic with a marvellous range of emotions and screen presence.
What do the WHOers think?

Better than Pitt and Law which isn't saying much. Very good in Catch Me If You can and Shutter Island.

Done some great films and been superb in them. Django unchained, Wolf of wall street ,blood diamond and the aviator to name a few, there are many.

Of course he's not a great actor, but he's passable, and has good taste. The new Tarantino film with him and Brad Pitt looks decent.

I'd agree with that.
He chooses really good projects.
But as an actual actor I have rarely seen him stretched. He never really makes you believe he isn't leo di caprio. Someone like Daniel Day Lewis, Mark Strong or Ralph Fiennes etc.. make you forget who they actually are as people.
Leo is pretty much always leo.
Which isnt always a bad thing, but its not what a top level actor should be about in my opinion.

The problem for many actors is that they get type-cast. The real test of their acting ability comes when they are cast in a part that breaks the mould.
I used to think Michael Caine was a very limited actor until I saw him in Sleuth. I used to think Hugh Grant was a very limited actor until I saw him playing Jeremy Thorpe in A Very British Scandal. You could say that Leonardo di Caprio is a very limited actor until you watch him in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? - a truly outstanding performance which is completely different from anything else he has been given by a whole lot of unimaginative directors.
So in answer to your question: yes, a great actor.

I used to think Sean Connery was a bad actor until I saw him in The Hunt For Red October, where I had it confirmed

Proper movie star. And been in some of the best films ever made.
he may not be the best actor but the films he has made stand him apart from many others. He's got the X factor.
